Case Study – BP Technology Forum

The Brief

BP wanted to showcase the future of upstream processes (oil from seabed to surface) to stakeholders, investors, heads of state, specialist partners, and employees in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Forum was a top level event, held at the Baku Hilton and it needed to tell the story of upstream processes whilst creating an interactive immersive experience.

The challenge was to find a way to illustrate large amounts of technical information about processes such as drilling, subsea platforms, wells and diving and recovery in an engaging and informative way, starting with an 800m2 empty space. The range of invitation only visitors added to the complexity, some being more knowledgeable than others, with varying degrees of English language capability.

The Solution

The upstream process of getting oil from the ground to the surface was broken down into stages. This was used to design a journey, telling the story from beginning to completion, by creating a series of spacess to move through. On arrival, a welcome and hospitality area led into the story area.

The spaces were created using 180 degree curved graphic features. Technical information featuring back illuminated panels guided visitors through each of the processes highlighting key information. At the end of the presentations, visitors were left to browse the remaining information. A special Recovery Room looking at how deep sea divers recover post-dive was created as a centre piece to the exhibit.

2BP worked alongside a digital agency, who provided the multimedia elements of the project and in conjunction with BP’s events agency to deliver the main interactive exhibition experience.

This format was also utilised in Port of Spain, Trindad and Tobago and in Luanda, Angola to support BP’s work in the regions.
